⇒URTICATION, subst. fém.
A. — PATHOL. Apparition d'une urticaire sur une peau saine ou sur une dermatose préexistante; la sensation de brûlure et les démangeaisons qui l'accompagnent. Les poils ainsi traités par l'éther, appliqués sur la peau, n'y produisent pas le moindre effet, même quand on en enduit la commissure des doigts, point très sensible au prurit de l'urtication (COUPIN, Animaux de nos pays, 1909, p. 273).
B. — MÉD. Flagellation faite avec des orties fraîches pour provoquer une vive irritation de la peau, une excitation révulsive locale. Après trois ou quatre jours, l'urtication ne produit plus aucun effet (TROUSSEAU, Hôtel-Dieu, 1895, p. 205). L'action plus énergique des vésicatoires ou des sinapismes a fait délaisser la méthode thérapeutique de l'urtication (QUILLET 1965).
